Our Story
How We Met
Dan and Carly met in college at Miami University. It was the summer after Dan's junior year and Carly's senior year. Carly was staying that summer to get a computer science minor and was having a little trouble with one of her classes.
When out at "nineties night" at a popular bar (Brick Street), their mutual friend introduced them. Carly was excited that Dan was a computer science major and could tutor her - Dan was excited that Carly was cute.
Dan did tutor Carly, but he had a crush on her and eventually won her over (she really did just want a tutor).
The Proposal
A story by Dan
Carly and I had talked about getting married a number of times over the years. After living together in New York for a few years, Carly started dropping the not-so-subtle hints. By this point we’d been together for several years and I thought "since we've been together so long, it needs to be really special." So I planned an extravagant vacation to Montauk - I just needed to get a ring. Easy, just pick one out from the shop, right? Well…it turns out rings aren't easy and you just can't pick one up the week before. Needless to say, I did not propose on that trip.
I planned several more vacations over the years intending to propose and made the same mistake of not getting a ring. In Carly's words, "Dan has a lot of heart but not a lot of follow through."
Fast forward to 2022. Having made it through COVID, I decided to get my act together and bought a ring. I just needed to plan one last trip. I’ve done it a thousand times now, should be easy right? Wrong - this time COVID got in the way. I planned a trip out to Montauk for the last nice week before it got cold, but I caught COVID from a work trip so we had to cancel.
Fast forward again to Christmas of 2022. We were at Carly's grandma's house in Long Island and I had a ring burning a hole in his pocket. In what I would describe as an "out of body experience", I abruptly left during presents, grabbed the ring, and came back and proposed in front of Carly's family. Carly was happy but stunned and what ensued was a slightly awkward but cute(?) proposal.
So after 10 years, I planned more proposals than most but learned that a moment doesn’t have to be perfect to be special. It took us a long time to get here, but we have enjoyed the journey and all of the laughs we have shared along the way. We are very excited to finally be getting married, and we hope our wedding is half as fun as the life we have led together thus far.
My proposal may have been awkward, but we’re goofy awkward people and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
